The Department of Chemistry
Department of Chemistry is one of the first departments founded within the university. The department has the most intense collaborations with the Institute of Chemistry, the Institute of Applied Physics, the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, as well as with some state and private organizations (“Apa-Canal”, the Institute of Metrology and Standardization, etc.). The members of the department collaborate with the specialists in the field from different universities in the country: Moldova State University, Dimitrie Cantemir University, Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova, as well as universities abroad: Pedagogical University of Krakow, University of Craiova, „AI Cuza ”from Iași, the University of Chernivtsi, the University of Turin, the University of Palermo, the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “P. Poni” from Iași, Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj Napoca, Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry from Moscow, etc. The compounds synthesized within the department are subjected to analyzes at the Institute of Chemistry in order to determine the composition. At the Institute of Applied Physics, there is determined the structure of the compounds, as well as some properties such as: luminescence, sorption capacity, anticorrosive properties, etc. The Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology tests the stimulating properties of physiological processes in fungi and algae.
The quality of some food products is analyzed both in the laboratories of the department and at the Institute of Standardization and Metrology, some laboratories of the enterprises in the field of the food industry.
With the foundation of the institution in 1930, Chemistry courses were taught at the Faculty specialties. The Department of Chemistry was founded in August 1937. Its first leader was professor V. Bogatschi. In July 1949, the professor Alexandru Camenev was elected head of the department through a competition. After the departure of professor Alexandru Camenev in Kiev in 1952, the Head of the department was appointed Eugen Nirca.
Later, Tudor Rusu, Moise Faerştein, Tudor Carabadjac held the position of Head of the department. Due to the increase of the students’ number in the three departments of the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry, Chemistry being introduced as a study discipline at the Faculty of Geography, Physics and Mathematics, there substantially increased the number of hours and the teaching staff. At that moment within the deparment there worked 15 specialists, having as guests: academicians Antonie Ablov, Iurie Lealicov, Gheorghe Lazurievski, prof. Mihail Cherdivarenco etc.
At the Chemistry department there was a seminar of Chemistry teachers from the city and districts, where there were solved stringent problems in order to deepen the theoretical didactic knowledge and practical skills. In the given field there were made efforts to organize the republican and district olympiads.
Beginning with 1992, after the evacuation of the university in Chisinau, because all the material base remained in Tiraspol during the Transnistrian conflict, the members of the department took measures to create the conditions of activity and training of future specialists, to equip the laboratories with the necessary equipment, to buy computers and educational software specific to Chemistry etc. Historically, the department of Chemistry had a specific and unique mission compared to the departments in the field from other universities – the training of Chemistry teachers, thus, the Didactics of Chemistry with all its implications is an area of strategic interest. Having its headquarters in Chisinau, the department was led by Tudor Para, Tidel Şanţovoi, Eduard Coropceanu, Grigore Filip, Alexandru Ciocârlan, Ion Arsene. New specialties were opened: Chemistry, Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Chemistry and Informatics, Ecological Security.
At present, the department of Chemistry offers educational services for all three university cycles: bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate. The members of the department participate in the teachers’ continuous professional training, as well as in the retraining of specialists from other fields. The scientific-methodological seminar “Didactics of Chemistry” has the mission of a discussion platform, where there addressed the most current issues in the field of Chemistry training.
In order to increase the professional competencies, the members of the Chemistry department carry out continuous training stages in various institutions in the country, as well as academic mobility in prestigious institutions abroad (Pedagogical University of Krakow, University of Craiova, “AI Cuza” University of Iasi, University of Chernivtsi, University of Turin, University of Palermo, the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry “P. Poni”from Iași, Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca, Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry in Moscow, etc.). Personalities in the field from the country and abroad are invited to the department with public lessons: Popescu R., Geană I., Moldoveanu C., Zbanciog Gh., Pui A., Cozma D., Lazzara G., Rotaru A., Rotaru P., Sandu M. etc.
